Oberhausen, Germany, – the world’s largest gasometer
The Oberhausen Cone was installed as the central display in a disused gasometer as part of an ‘Air & Water’ exhibition designed by the London based firm – Ian Ritchie Architects and the renowned German photographer Wolfgang Volz.
Lindstrand Technologies Ltd. used an innovative single-skin transparent fabric, which was held up by internal super-pressure, to produce a cone that was 50 metres tall. Lit from within, with 8 tonnes of water flowing continuously over the fabric’s surface, the Oberhausen cone was a spectacular sight inside the total darkness of the gasometer. At the base a channel captured the flowing water and recirculated it to the top of the cone. The exhibition ran for a period of 6 months.
